Backtrack to 2013: Catching up on Reviews and stuff

Hello There.

so this post is all about an update on my life/what i’ve been up to/reviews

We’re The Millers – this movie is hilarious!!! Will Poulter’s character is my fave of course! possibly one of the funniest movies of the year.

Before Midnight – these movies are really unique because 90% of the movie is just two people talking. and i love that. it started of as such a cute loves tory but the ending…i wasn’t so happy with.

Β Kick-Ass 2 – so violent i wouldn’t recommend it. unneccessarily violent. funny at times but majority of the movie was just stupid.

3-tamil movie my friend told me to watch this coz of the guy AND SHE DIDN’T WARN ME. so i’ma all like squee this is so cute he loves her and the way he dances and haha so funny and aww her little sister is adorbs and whatnot yay woah they get married so quickly and then BAM. omg he gets her a pug…here’s the song where he gives it to her at 1.17.

and then suddenly everything changes and of course it goes crazy and doesn’t end well.

because he loves her so much and she loves him so much it is UNHEALTHY. he lies to her. he has bipolar and he doesnt tell her because he’s scared and it’s jst horrible.

so messed up

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs- what a wonderfully weird movie, i love it it’s so funny and such an insane concept. i know it’s based on a book. but it’s adorbs.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2– sadly this wasn’t as great as the first movie. but still quite cute. urgh the marshmallows and the strawberries kfhgdzhj adorbs

Frozen – urgh such an emotional movie i actually teared up! the songs were good and PLOT TWIST MUCH I DIDN’T SEE IT COMING I WAS SO ANGRY.

kristoff and sven are wonderful- kristoff kind of reminds me of Peeta lol. i want a reindeer friend!

and princess anna who is adorable and awkward and just i love her.

Princess Anna and Kristoff on an Adventure.

i love queen elsa such a bamf

and of course olaf is my fave

yes. yes it is.

i may or may not have cried in this movie…

Let It Go- Demi Lovato

i’ve seen Catching Fire three times. =P can’t wait for the DVD with 2hrs of extra stuff!

HAHAHAHA that was improv!

Every Day by David Levithan

US and UK Covers- i like the orange one which is the one i got

it’s about a ‘boy’ who wakes up as a different person ever day!!!! omg ikr. it’s crazy. what a concept. so he lives the lives of different people just for one day. BUT they’re usually the same age etc but it’s just really weird but so good and then he falls in love with this girl and things get complicated and the end omg the end is so cute but sad and i just gddfjkfdgkjhfkjgh THIS BOOK WILL GIVE YOU FEELS. but go read it. it is worth it. =)

House of Hades by Rick Riordan

i loathe these covers

um. what can i say? this book is everything. i love it. it was funny and emotional and omg PERCABETH IN TARTARUS AND BOB IS MY FAVE AND OMG LEO AND CALYPSO AND OMF POOR NICO I LOVE NICO. i honestly thought nico would have a POV but sadly he didn’t. also omf frank became such a bamf and wow i just love this book and i can’t believe the Heroes of Olympus Series will be over soon. =(

if you HAVEN’T read the Percy Jackson series yet? WHY? if you love greek mythology please do. and then Heroes of Olympus is just WAY better…more humour and the characters are older and a mixture of characters and also ROMAN DEMIGODS WOAH. serously idc if it’s for 9 year olds i am gonna be 20 and i’ll still read the last book.

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

cute but not as good as Eleanor and Park

so of course i love Rainbow Rowell because ELEANOR AND PARK IS SUCH AN AMAZING BOOK. but this is an adult book that she wrote ages ago (in the 90s). it took me a while to get into because frankly the first half is kind of BORING but then after a while i kind like the characters and it’s funny and then it becomes REALLY CUTE and yeah. it made me want to play Dungeons and Dragons…is that weird? at least once…just to try it…lol.

Let it Snow by Maureen Johnson, John Green and Lauren Myracle

perfect holiday read

literally the 2nd best bookΒ  (first is Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares) to read during the Christmas Holidays . which is what i did. cute holiday romances by wonderful authors. the stories eventually link, they’re funny and yeah i enjoyed them. a light read for the holiday. =) also doesn’t help with my unrealistic expectations of guys…

Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith aka J.K.Rowling

so like i felt like reading a REALLY GOOD BOOK because the book si’ve previously read weren’t THAT amazing and i needed to get into a good read so i was like OH. i shall try some crime fiction. and of course j.k.rowling is a fabulous writer. so i read this. OMG IT IS SO GOOD. like seriously. it’s funny an descriptive and intriguing and like woah plot twists and just really well written and the detail…like SHE WROTE ABOUT MY AREA. as in Tottenham Court Road is RIGHT NEAR MY UNIVERSITY. AND SHE SAID HE WENT TO TH EUNIVERTIY OF LONDON UNION WHICH IS LITERALLY NEXT DOOR TO MY UNI!!! so like j.k.rowling could have been walking around my uni area kjhdfkjdhgkhdfkgdk . i love when books are set in places i know about. but then i also love it when they’re set in places i don’t know about so i can one day go there and explore!

anyways it’s about this model who supposedly commits suicide (or does she?) and her brother wants to reopen the case etc and it’s just really good and i like Robin the secretary and Cormoran Strike aint such a bad guy. i don’t usually read crime fiction but this is so good and gripping and if you want a good CAPTIVATING novel then this is it.

SoPhia: a novel by Shafinaaz Hassim

cover is kind of dull but i like the pattern

i had high hopes for this book. sadly i was kind of disappointed. there was too much going on…like bad things just kept on happening and it was like REALLY IS THAT NECESSARY? also the whole philosophical aspect was a bit too much like what is your point? the character i was most invested in was Mariam, her parents and her children. Zareen was annoying and i felt sorry for her but also SHE NEEDED THERAPY TOO. i am glad in the end it all worked out etc but i don’t get the whole alchemy, enlightened thing and the SoPhia house in Mauritius like wtf? okay so it’s a story of domestic abuse and maintaining a household and keeping the family together (for whose sake though?) and suffering in silence etc. i think it had POTENTIAL to be a good sotry if there wasn’t so much going on (domestic abuse, depressed sister in law, death, therapy, coma etc)

Gretel and the Dark by Eliza Granville (courtesy of Spinebreakers)

papercutting workshop! i think i did a pretty good job!

papercutting workshop! i think i did a pretty good job!

at the Spinebreakers Editorial Meeting we had a paper cutting worship by Poppy Chancellor it was nice being creative and artsy…it’s been so long since i’ve drawn/painted/done anything art related since school (i usually just make cards).

this is a mix of historical fiction/mystery and fairy tales. it was kind of like inception…a story within a story and very confusing at times. eventually i kind of pieced some stuff together but the end it was all revealed.

i did enjoy it but it was also rather disturbing…it dealt with a lot of things from abuse to harassment and then friendship and love.

sadly i didn’t meet my goal of reading 52 books i think i only read like 36 or something. my aim is to read a book a week.

I AM REALLY EXCITED FOR: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, Cress by Marissa Meyer, City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare, The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan and lots of other new books in 2014!

I had the pleasure of meeting Holly Black (author of tithe, curse workers trilogy and the coldest girl in coldtown)

as well as Veronica Roth (okay i STILL haven’t read Allegiant BUT i know bad stuff happens. i will be getting it for my birthday!) and I SAW SHAILENE WOODLEY!!!

Veronica Roth and Shailene Woodley

Veronica Roth and Shailene Woodley

if you want to know HOW to meet authors? simply check out their websites/social media and also BOOK websites. in the UK i check out the Waterstones and Foyles websites for author events and you simply book a ticket and go see the author give a talk and sign books. =)

some Music stuff:

Wild Heart– The Vamps

I AM SEEING TAYLOR SWIFT’S RED TOUR IN THE UK IN FEBRUARY 2014. YAY. (the vamps are opening for her i am so exciting!!!)

I See Fire– Ed Sheeran wrote a song for The hobbit: Desolation of Smaug movie soundtrack and it is beautiful! i am also hopefully going to see him in October 2014. YAY FOR HIS UK TOUR!!!

MTV Girl Code: this is hilarious. guys should watch this too, but seriously an mtv show where some girls talk about ‘girl stuff’ and a few guys too. it’s quite informative in an informal way.

omg when i was in South Africa it was great for my self esteem coz my three younger cousins (4, 6 and 10) were all like YOU LOOK SO PRETTY, BEAUTIFUL WOW I LOVE YOU’ and i’m like aasdfghjkl;’

Arrow– my dad hates that my bro and i watch this show coz he says it’s so crap. it’s not terrible. i really like shadow and i hope she hasn’t died. oliver and felicity needs to happen. i do not like laurel one bit.omg barry alan yay and omg plot twist much the end why.. urgh shadow is the best

American Horror Story: Coven: THIS SHOW IS SO MESSED UPΒ

Jessica Lange is just phenomenal.

too bad we don’t see much of Kyle. =( he’s kind of like Frankenstein’s monster…but poor kyle…what happend to him was so messed up (abuse).

the racism is clear: black= voodoo and bad while white= superior/good magic

and of course the whole slavery thing which was horrific. i couldn’t watch it.

beauty/youth- fiona’s pursuit of the concoction- whole idea of elixir of life/immortality/youthfulness/fear of aging (AND THE THING THAT KEPT HER YOUNG…? BABY’S BLOOD. GROSS)

i don’t get it- this world is so crazy and messed up why be immortal? outlive everyone you love etc

this show is like some eps are really good and others are just annoying.

the most iconic/annoying thing

bet you thought you’d seen the last of me…

The Mindy Project- omg danny likes mindy-he admitted it to himself. but the annoying thing about the show is that they introduce new guys for mindy to date and they’re nice and so i like them but ultimately DANNY AND MINDY JDSHFJHDGFJH i mean he danced for her…like he actually did a dance as her christmas present. IF A GUY DANCES TO YOUR FAVE SONG…JHFJMGHFD KEEP HIM FOREVER.

The Newsroom

i literally watched 2 seasons in a week. =P

but also her hair looks gross. like okay cut your hair fine but then go to a salon and get it done again.

at first i was like OMG JIM IS PERF and then he gets annoying and can be an idiot but i still like him

i thought Don was a jerk at first but him and Sloane are cute and he does mean well but i would prefer to date Jim than Don.

Sloane is actually my fave character. but i also love Neil- he is hilarious.

Will and Mackenzie though like seriously. are you blind/dumb? why torture yourselves. I’M SORRY BUT YOU DON’T JUST BUY A TIFFFANY’S RING AND THEN SAY YOU’RE OVER THE PERSON AND LEAVE IT IN YOUR CUPBOARD FOR THREE YEARS OR MORE LIKE WTF. nope. obv u still love her smh.
love is weird man these people are messed up. WHY DENY YOURSELF LOVE…
but then the finale was too good to be true and too predictable like it was kind of anticlimatic.

but the show is good…it’s the news. and the drama in the newsroom etc

Modern Family is hilarious as always

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary:

even google was excited for the 50th anniversary!

11 Dancing Doctors

brilliant. seeing Rose as Bad Wolf was painful but seeing the three doctors interact was ksjdhfkj.

Doctor Who Christmas special:

so long raggedy man

matt smith- bowties are cool

i feel like Matt Smith was saying that to himself as well as the audience

omg i can’t. i love Molly but wtf was her wedding outfit? i love mary dnt say anything bad about her SHE DID WHAT SHE HAD TO DO TO SURVIVE. also. john omg i just wanna hug him. sherlock urgh so hot i can’t.

drunk sherlock was hilarious.

molly’s bf…hahaha

season 3 was defo for the fans. it was also funnier. but the end tho…jadshfkdjhg DID YOU MISS ME??????? HAHAHA

every fangirl’s dream tbh

*coughs* *clears throat* *dies*

Book Club: i host a historical fiction book club at my dad’s school with my friend. the book ic hose this term for year 10/11 was Ruby Red by Linzi Glass which is about growing up in apartheid South Africa in the 1970s, and being a white english girl yet supporting black people etc. it’s a really good book, and covers the Soweto Riots and the brutality of the apartheid regime. i’m so glad the girls enjoyed it AND they learned about what apartheid was all about! it’s also nice to be an inspiration to those girls. =) the next book i’ll be doing is I, Coriander by Sally Gardner with year 7 and 8s.

this is a really interesting article about disability, being grateful, death and just appreciating life

lots of books, movies and exciting things to look forward to in 2014 so Alhamdulilah for another amazing year.

Power to the People Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela 1990

Free Palestine

‘Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.’
