Salaams fellow peeps!
so this post is an update on all my baking adventures since i last blogged about baking (i think that was in september…oops)
The Great British Bake-Off...Tuesday nights were awesome because of it. i was rooting for Francis so i’m glad she won, although those wedding cakes in the final were a bit…boring. but whatever. anyways..that show is so funny and really interesting and so nerve-wrecking i could never bake under pressure (i already did a bake of with my friend last year…okay…in 2012). but when i bake i like to have the kitchen to myself and yeah. anyways i just admire the Kitchen Aids they use in GBBO. but the amount of DRAMA for a baking show…it was really funny and i just enjoyed watching them make stuff and judging it. but also like they have some weird recipe flavour combinations. anyways if you live in the UK you can apply for season 5 now!
Junior Bake-Off- this is the kids version on CBBC and i loved it. these are some talented young bakers. i only started baking recently like a few years ago but if i started when i was 10 i would hope that i’d be amazing by now! i do need to improve and expand my baking and try some more pies (i’ve only made pecan pie and choc chip cookie pie) and possibly even breads. i thought Emma or Harry would win and Harry did win which in a way i’m glad…because idk if you know any young boys who like to bake!. i mean my little brother likes to watch/help my stepmum bake because he has nothing better to do. also it IS fun…the process and then the outcome! =D but yeah…it gives me hope that there ARE boys who bake (and cook) that exist.
i also watch Cake Boss no and again…i do love seeing the elaborate cakes and the crazy cakes people ask him to make but also i love seeing them prank each other! also i love watching how running a bakery works on a large scales…those giant ovens etc
i sometimes watch other baking competitions hows but they’re usually on a massive scale so half the cake is edible and the other half is like wood or plastic to hold the cake or whatever.
finally my mum bought me the new Hummingbird Recipe book: Home Sweet Home with some more fabulous recipes!
i’ve been baking like crazy co i love it. i mean hello, i find it very therapeutic. and also it’s so much fun. i love the smell of baking and wearing the apron my friend made for me and it’s just the best.
but i like having the kitchen to myself…just me and the kenwood (a kitchen aid is my dream) and all the ingredients etc but my kitchen is quite small so the more people the more crazy it gets then it isn’t very relaxing.
so here goes…
Nutella Cookies: i used this recipe but used chocolate buttons instead of caramel chocolate
these cookies are insanely delicious. they’re so soft and chewy and oh gosh the SURPRISE IN THE MIDDLE.
topped with some icing sugar they are just splendid
back in September, two of my friends came over and we made a Nutella Cheesecake. although my one friend didn’t want to get her hands dirty i mean REALLY? such a loser smh but we had fun and MY GOSH WAS IT YUMMY
Nutella Cheesecake: we used this recipe
it’s also REALLY easy to make!!!
the picture is kind of bad but i promise you it tasted ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS I MEAN HELLO WE USED A WHOLE JAR OF NUTELLA.
Chocolate Cake: 2 layers with strawberries and cream inside. my mum’s recipe.
made this for Eid. =)
Date and Pecan Loaf Cake: i can’t remember where i got the recipe from but it was somewhere online
it’s usually a date and walnut cake but we always have pecans so i just used that.
also i made this by hand AND IT WAS SO MUCH FUN URGH AND IT TASTES SO YUMMY!!! i really enjoyed making it and eating it!
so like my brother is obsessed with doughnuts and he’s been nagging me to make some but i’m like urgh so much effort and then is earched baked doughnuts and just bought the doughnut tin and like yay.
so then one day i made doughnuts. no mixer needed, you just need a big bowl and a spatula and the ingredients of course.
i used this recipe for the doughnut
and then this recipe for the chocolate glaze
so all the doughnuts were cinnamon flavoured but half were cinnamon and sugar and the other half chocolate
the doughnut pan only has 6 holes and most recipes make at least 12 doughnuts
anyways i’ll lefo be making more doughnuts now and every1 ate them as soon as they were ready!
Charity Week at SOAS: so i baked all week. made vanilla cupcakes with mock cream
also made nutella cookies, brownies with nutella icing
Fatichoh’s 20th b.day: double choc chip cookies (with ganache) and lemon cupcakes (Hummingbird recipe)
Strawberries and Cream Cake for Ashura:
for the sponge i used this recipe
but i hate jam in anything unless it’s a peanut butter and jam sandwich. so i just put cream and strawberries. and flake of course.
Horseshoe Pastries: mis abuelos came to london for a week and my grandma showed me how to make horseshoes- it’s so easy!
they’re so lovely and crispy. =) it all depends on how you cut them and how long you leave it in the oven.
Red Velvet Cupcakes: hummingbird bakery classic.
i just love the cream cheese frosting. and using gel food colouring makes the colour richer.
Cheesecake: i’m pretty sure i’ve made cheesecake more than 5 times in 2013. it is so easy and boring but i still make it coz it’s yum. it’s my mum’s fool proof recipe.
Viennese Whirls: i used this recipe
they’re so good they just MELTED IN YOUR MOUTH.
but it was so hard to pipe them. i need a new piping set.
Christmas Cupcakes: vanilla cupcakes with mock cream. it’s a top secret recipe. =P
the only Christmassy thing is the green icing.
and glitter. but i always use glitter. edible glitter is the best
Oreo Cupcakes: hummingbird bakery recipe
putting the oreos into the batter…so much fun!
Chocolate Chunk Cookies: i used this recipe
THIS IS HOW MUCH CHOCOLATE I USED
and then I WAS JUMPING UP AND DOWN IN EXCITEMENT BECAUSE
and then i mixed it
THE END RESULT
oh my glob but the icing is perfection. urgh this is so good. insanely delicious. one of my fave recipes. it makes 2 loaves and it will we gone by the end of the week! trust me it’s so good.
Box of Treats: includes: 2 Nutella Brownies, 1 Double Choc Chip Cookie (the Nigella recipe) and 1 Cinnamon Doughnut (the ones i made first but i just glazed them)
i made these for my old school friends as presents coz i’m awesome. Alhamdulilah they really enjoyed it. and wEre like HOW DID YOU MAKE DOUGHNUTS?! =p
SO IT’S 2014…more baking ahead. hopefully gonna try some more doughnut recipes and maybe try muffins. i do want to make a roulade and carrot cake. and of course plenty more cookies and cupcakes!
the sad thing is i can’t bake whenever i want to because i don’t have the house to myself and also i can’t bake at like 1am coz of the neighbours (the houses in london are close together and the walls are thin) so yeah…but also because if i use the mixer it will make a noise and disturb others in the house. i guess i cld bake by hand but still the oven and then the noises from the kitchen. one day i’ll have my own house and KitchenAid and will be able to bake whenever i feel like it! Insha’Allah. =)
Happy Baking and Happy 2014!
SOMEONE NEEDS TO GET ME THIS FOR MY BIRTHDAY!
