so this is basically a review post on all the books i’ve been reading, tv i’ve been watching and movies i’ve seen since my last post which was like so 2 months ago i’m sorry
I HAVE RED 11 BOOKS SINCE MY LAST POST WHICH WAS IN OCTOBER. I AM VERY PROUD CONSIDERING ALL THE ACADEMIC READING I HAD TO DO TOO.
so here come a bunch load of reviews.
so this is a part memoir therefore it is NON-FICTION…i usually tend to rad these humour non fiction books r
ather than depressing ones about politics by john pilger or noam chomsky coz that makes me want to kill myself because the world is so corrupt and depressing
anyways so this book was delightfully humurous and slightly traumatising as her childhood adventures were…disturbing at times. her father loved taxidermy so yeah…
BUT i thought one of the most INSANE YET CUTE THINGS was the story of how she met her husband
they were in a bookstore and she was looking for a book and wearing a certain coat and this guy was like i have that book and she was like okay and he was like you can borrow it if you want and she was like meh but then idk i guess she agreed and then he was like i dreamt or knew that i’d meet my future wife in a bookstore wearing that coat or it was something to do with that coat.
side note: my friend is always like you could meet your future husband in a bookstore…yes. yes i could.
BUT WHAT WOULD JOSH HUTCHERSON BE DOING IN A BOOKSTORE? buying books of course. waiting for me. duh.
basically. they met in a bookstore. and he spoke to her because she was wearing a particular coat.
random? but romantic…and they are such an unlikely pair i mean it’s that whole he’s so rich and his family so upper class and she grew up poor and remained poor for a long time until now she’s like this famous blogger and yeah she is hilarious. also follow her on twitter coz she’s just brilliant.
sticking with the non-fiction theme…i also read
so yeah this book. fantastic. i reviewed her previous one HOW TO BE A WOMAN
anyways so this is even funnier and yeah she’s just brilliant. it’s about politics and tv shows she fangirls over Sherlock and Doctor Who and her brilliant insights she’s hilarious. i want to BE HER. but i can’t. the ONLY thing i didn’t like was that she hates Charlie and Lola and i love that show and the books. but yeah she writes for The Times and you should follow her on twitter too
so she basically just writes articles on popular culture which is what i’d love to do. she gets to interview cool people like David Tennant and Lady Gaga DREAM JOB RIGHT THERE. actually no it would be up there with writing for National Geographic is is my ULTIMATE DREAM
so i think Mindy Kaling is pretty badass comedian. i haven’t actually watched The Office UK or US but i do watch The Mindy Project which is HILARIOUS.
also i know she’s a Republican which is meh but she’s still pretty cool and awesome
so her book talks about her childhood, her time on The Office and struggling to survive and making friends and love and romcoms etc good stuff
yes it is a good laugh
also…i totally agree with the whole romcom thing…they have limited roles for women..it’s always the hardworking mother or the work obsessed woman or the insecure woman or the slutty one who needs to settle down urgh it goes on
that being said i am still a hopeless romantic and i love romcoms…though there haven’t been any REALLY good ones lately
also she talks about her weight and society which is relevant for anyone because society and the media are obsessed with body image and so we become obsessed with body image too.
on to fiction now
this cover is really terrible but i was curious to read a book about a Muslim or something and i found this
so this girl is American and she end sup getting arrested at a party due to illegal substances being used (not by her) and so her parents send her to Egypt to stay with her grandma for a while.
she is obviously stupid and annoying and ignorant so you want to slap her AT FIRST
but eventually she grows along with the story and learns to love and respect herself and her culture/heritage/roots/religion
and to experience the Egyptian Revolution must have been an incredible experience…for the character but obviously for all those who participated.
so yeah it’s about politics but also family and friendship and love
tbh there isn’t much YA fiction about Muslims for teenagers so maybe one day i’ll write one.
i did tear up in this book because i grew quite attached to her grandma.
also on a random note i did my politics essay on revolutions in the 21st century
i have no idea why it has taken me AGES to read this book. it’s been sitting on my shelf for so long and then eventually i decided to pick it up
oh wow it’s one hell of a roller-coaster it’s full of PLOT TWISTS and yes it is dystopian and these guys are stuck in this place called the GLADE and there’s this maze…which there seems to be no escape and there’s these things called GRIEVERS which are like a mix between blobby gelatinous blob things crossed with a machine so it’s blobby and gross but also has like chainsaw arms…lovely
anyways it’s brilliant. i can’t wait to read the sequel which i got and yes it has been optioned for a movie so we’ll see.
anyways so this is the sequel to Meg Cabot’s Abandon and so Pierce is stuck in the Underworld with the John…the leader of the dead essentially haha fun times.can i just say…some of it was predictable and other stuff was like NO HOW COULD THAT HAPPEN LIKE MAJOR PLOT TWISTS
looking forward to the final installment in the trilogy
so basically i knew it was gonna be a movie so i decided to read it
it is futuristic and so the world is battling with these buggers from another planet…
so Ender is this 6 year
old genius kid who gets chosen to Battle School in space
and he doesn’t exactly fit in
but he does make a few…allies
and there are some major plot twists like i thought it’d be a bit predictable but no…
it was full of surprises
and this book was written in like the
1970s so yeah
it’s pretty darn awesome
the movie stars Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Abigail Breslin, Hailee Steinfeld and Moises Aries (yes Rico from Hannah Montana all grown up) and many more
the kids basically are the movie so it should be a great action adventure. =)
Release Date: 25TH october 2013 (in the UK)
so i was given this by Spinebreakers and wrote a review for it here:
so yes this book was surprisingly good maybe because i had no expectations
but at times it was kinda boring at other time is was shouting at the book
what i liked the most was that Lily was a strong female protagonist because she found it hard to trust people and took crap from no one and yes she let her guard down at times but she learnt from her mistakes…eventually.
i think it might be a trilogy i don’t know if i’ll be bothered to read the sequel but i did enjoy this
yes it is kind of about vampires and it is dystopian but it’s not a vampire love story *phew*
so i wanted to read a light hearted book with a cute love story…kind of like Anna and the French Kiss which i reviewed:
so at first i was like OKAY
SERIOUSLY NO THEY DID NOT JUST MEET AT THE AIRPORT AND SIT NEXT TO EACH OTHER LIKE WHAT EVEN HOW UNREALISTIC AND STUPID IS THAT
but the hopeless romantic in me was like GAH THIS IS SO CUTE AND WHAT IF THAT HAPPENED TO ME ONE DAY
but tbh the girl was kinda annoying and stubborn and moaning all the time i understand divorce can be tough and a parent remarrying can be horrible but gosh have some perspective of course she eventually saw sense
as for Oliver…well of course he is a cute british guy and i have no idea where they seem to be hiding (away from me obviously)
so it was cute and funny and yes the ending was adorable with the whole dancing in the rain thing like asdfghjkl;
but it wasn’t on the cuteness/swoonworthy as Anna and the French Kiss so maybe i’ll get another book by that author but then i have HIGH EXPECTATIONS.
anyways so i read this book quickly because it was easy to read and i was looking forward to reading it and finding out more about Anya and her story.
i loved her time in Mexico I LOVE THEO he is so funny and cute
of course i was surprised
by the ending…so looking forward to the sequel
but yeah the year is 2083 and for some reason chocolate is banned in the US (actually it’s coz production costs were expensive so the American food companies were like let’s just say how unhealthy it is blah blah blah) IMAGINE A WORLD WITH NO CHOCOLATE NO THANK YOU
so yeah i enjoyed this book and THE END QUESTION IS…DREAM JOB VS TRUE LOVE?!
my dream job is like to write for national geographic and idk if i need to be at their HQ which is in Washington D.C…damn i
always thought it was NYC which i’ve dreamed of living in…not forever but for some time.
and it’s also like the end of FRIENDS…should rachel take that job or stay with Ross or WHAT?
thing is…i would hope whoever fell in love would wld understand that i need to do this. and he would support me. i hope it never comes down to an ultimatum. and if it’s meant to be then it will be. =) but let’s hope i never have to choose between true love and dream job.
and last but NOT LEAST I FINALLY READ THE CASUAL VACANCY
oh you don’t know who it’s by? only the QUEEN…
NO NOT THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND
so anyways…i’ve seen
so many bad reviews about this book but hello…it’s written for ADULTS and it is not about magic or anything to do with Harry Potter.
it’s about this fictional town called Pagford and how this one death causes so many problems in the town politics but also how it affects everyone’s lives.
small towns..small minds…JUST KIDDING but small town…full of nosey people and their lives are interlinked but they don’t even know it
so at first it can be confusing due to the interrelated stories but then i got used to it and really enjoyed it and let me just tell you how Umbrella by Rihanna features heavily in the book…
and one of my favourite storylines was *SPOILER ALERT*
samantha’s obsession with these teen boyband…creeepppyyyyy but so funny
i was kind of shocked at all the deaths…yeah more people die
also a note on Sukhvinder…i can totally relate to how she felt. no i was much younger when i was bullied about being hairy and different and i went to a multicultural school when i moved to London but yeah
also i liked how Rowling incorporated the fact that the town wasn’t multicultural because most little towns in England aren’t. but there was that little Sikh family.
yes if you didn’t know in the UK there are many Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Jews, Bhuddists etc etc
whereas in the US you ONLY hear about the Chrstians and Jews. like no one else. apart from those attacks on Sikhs the news had to explain to the country who sikhs are and why they are not muslim or hindu like wtf how ignorant is that country?
in the UK it is compulsory to do Religious Studies till you leave school at 16. and i loved RS. in primary school i learnt so much about Hinduism and
Sikhism and the 5 major religions basically. as a person of faith of course i’m interested in what others believe.
so anyways this was really good
here is my goodreads profile if you wanna see what i’m reading and mini reviews
onto so movies now
so i saw Breaking Dawn Part 2 which was HILARIOUS but i have to say my favourite of the Twilight movies.
Ruby Sparks– it’s about this guy who writes this story and his character comes to life so he makes her do things like speak french and he falls in love with her etc it’s really messed up but cute
I FINALLY SAW THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK
of course i was excited because i got to see my friend after a month and also i made her read the book so we were both excited and then duh JENNIFER LAWRENCE IS FRICKIN INSANELY AWESOME
so yeah it was good. weird but good. they changed stuff i mean they had to it’s understandable but brilliant cast and brilliant performance from all of them. i laughed a lot. and just watch it…the book is really short so you should read it before. but really it’s gotten great reviews and just i enjoyed it =)
it’s a documentary about the media’s presentation of women. it’s really interesting as it’s about gender stereotypes and society/media and how they shape our view of women and what a woman should be or look like.
so of course it’s relevant for both guys and girls as we live in a media celebrity obsessed culture where we’re obsessed with body image and whatever we see these actors or singers doing we want to do/follow.copy.
not everyone of course. but kids and teens are easily influenced.
me yes i love Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Emma Watson, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift to name but a few. i love their style and their music and their films and their personalities and what they stand for. beautiful people inside and out. great role models. funny too. =)
but of course media portrays them in a certain way. jennifer lawrence and dieting, demi lovato and her time in rehab, taylor swift being a supposed slut etc etc constant bashing and shaming.
but also HONEY BOO BOO and how these young toddlers are becoming famous and how it can impact on them psychologically like those two girls you always see on The Ellen Degeneres show Rosie and Sophia Grace they got famous by dancing to Superbass…
anyways you should watch the documentary…it gives you more of an insight to how the media can control us with their adverts and propaganda.
i just saw
LIFE OF PI
i read the book
about 2 years ago i can’t remember if i reviewed it or not though…
but basically it’s one of my FAVOURITE BOOKS AND YOU SHOULD READ IT BECAUSE IT IS SUPER AWESOME
it’s very philosophical
but yeah if you love animals and inspiring books you should defo read this
so essentially this boy Pi (short for Piscine…yeah he was named after a swimming pool) live sin India and his father owns a zoo but then they have to move to Canada so then they go on this ship and then BAM…everyone basically dies and he ends up on this life boat with some animals.
and basically he frickin survives. he makes it out alive. and it’s just a beautiful story of survival, hope and faith.
oh and the movie in 3D was stunning. the cinematography is beautiful and just the actors Suraj Sharma wow
and the tiger is real btw. obv they filmed it separately but wow.
love the book. love the movie. it manages to capture the essence of the story and i hope it makes YOU believe too.
i’m sure i watched a few more movies since October but i can’t remember so when/if i do i shall review them.
i’m hopefully going to see Les Miserables (sadly i have not read the book or seen the play) and Pitch Perfect (which looks absolutely hilarious)
before i start on the music…A FEW TRAILERS YOU SHOULD SEE
yes this is the Stephenie Meyer ADULT sci fi novel and yes it is coming out on the 29th of March 2013 and yes i am very excited.
you should read it before you see it. it’s quite fat so it might take you a month or so.
‘you’re not a mundane’
oh gosh THIS IS HAPPENING THE MOVIE…23RD AUGUST 2013 OMG I AM SO EXCITED I LOVE THIS SERIES GO READ IT IF YOU HAVEN’T IT’S REALLY FUNNY AND OH WOW THE CAST IS AMAZING.
this is gonna be good. =)
ANNOUNCEMENT: THEY HAVE FINISHED FILMING CATCHING FIRE.
AND HERE IS THE OFFICIAL POSTER
i’m not done fangirling…
2013 is going to be a good year for fangirling…
let me do a quick TV thing…quick..haha yeah right
American Horror Story: Asylum- i am not a fan of horror and yet i watch this show. firstly it’s the second season. secondly, it’s not just because Evan Peters is hot. but that is one of the reasons. yes Ryan Murphy does write it (writer of Glee) but it’s really good and so messed up and not for the faint hearted. i forward most things if they’re too gross/scary. but yeah it’s pretty awesome.
Hart of Dixie- okay so this is basically about this big city surgeon who ends up in a small southern town. and i love it. starring Rachel Bilson i have grown to love this show it’s funny and just WADE KINSELLA IS SO HOT.
New Girl- if you don’t watch this already you really should. it’s such a funny programme and so lovely. i mean
yes they’re a bunch of weirdos being crazy awesome and just making me laugh. Zooey Deschanel is just so ADORKABLE.
Suburgatory– this show is about this big city girl who moves to the suburbs and how she is such a misfit and what the crazy suburban people get up to. it’s so funny.
The Vampire Diaries- don’t judge this show isn’t just about the hot Salvatore brothers. i don’t actually like Elena. my fave female character is Caroline and Rebekah. and i love Klaus and Damon.
Arrow– it’s based on a comic book and it’s pretty alright i was shocked to find CAPTAIN JACK AS IN THE FACE OF BO AS IN JOHN BARROWMAN in the show. pleasantly surprised 😉 but yeah the main guy is hot. i really want him to be with the IT girl at the business. she’s so cool.
The Mindy Project- it’s about these doctors and it’s funny coz mindy kaling wrote it
2 Broke Girls- this show kills me it is always so funny and just WTF but hilarious…i mean just…full of adult humour.
MIRANDA IS BACK RIGHT NOW
Doctor Who Christmas Special- SCARY SNOWMEN. but Clara Oswin Oswald might just be my 2nd fave companion after Rose of course. i do love the doctor. 😉
Suits- can’t wait for the new season in January. i love Mike Ross okay. and Harvey is awesome he and Donna need to get together.
Pretty Little Liars- the halloween episode was frickin scary i actually screamed!!! but *SPOILER ALERT*
I CAN’T BELIEVE TOBY IS ON THE FRICKIN A TEAM I’M NOT OVER IT AND I DON’T THINK I WILL EVER BE OVER IT COZ SPENCER AND TOBY WERE PERF
Take Me Out: it’s this reality tv show where there is the love lift and each week about 4 guys come down and have vids about themselves and like 30 girls either keep their lights on for a date or turn their lights off if they don’t like him. and eventually he gets to choose between 2 if enough keep their lights on. basically one of the girls Lois GOES TO MY UNIVERSITY HAHAHAHAAHAHAHA.
X Factor US- i watched this because demi lovato and britney spears judged this year and i love them. also i’m glad i did because i discovered emblem3 and my life hasn’t been the same since. also Carly Rose Sonenclar is fantastic. but Tate Stevens won. also taylor swift performed State of Grace which was awesome.
Phineas and Ferb– because this show is just my favourite and i love the songs and the characters and everything it just makes me laugh so much and it’s so cute and who doesn’t wanna watch a show about two step brothers making crazy things with their friends while their insane teenage sister tries to bust them meanwhile their pet platypus is a secret agent trying to defeat the supposedly evil genius Doofenshmirtz. did i mention songs? you learn a lot. for example: did you know the tip of a shoelace is called an aglet DON’T FORGET IT.
Misfits– i decided to watch this because Robert Sheehan is in TMI movie and so i wanted to see if he can act and also my friend said it’s really good. this show is completely messed up. but hilarious. and very disturbing at times.
Gossip Girl- nope i only watched the last episode because i mean hellooo i watched like the first 3 seasons. anyways so we found out who gossip girl is *SPOILER ALERT* Dan Humphrey yes lonely boy himself. WTF? it was so anticlimactic. but Chuck and Blair was so adorable and i loved her dress. Blair’s fashion sense is impeccable. especially all those Elie Saab dresses. *sigh*
i bet you’re sitting there thinking WOW SHE WATCHES SO MUCH TV HOW DOES SHE HAVE TIME FOR ANYTHING ELSE?
sad reality is…i rarely go out during term time only to see a movie or my friends sometimes but i usually stay in and watch tv/movies. i’m a very lazy person.
so i’m looking forward to january because new seasons start or new episodes WINTER TV SEASON YAYS
okay so finally this post is ending soon yeah aren’t you happy. i bet no one actually read this whole thing it’s way too long.
the past 3 months i’ve been listening to: Taylor Swift, EMBLEM3, Ed Sheeran, The Lumineers, Imagine Dragons and The Script. that is pretty much it.
so the Lord has been good to me as always but i was lucky enough to go see Taylor Swift at Westfield Shopping Centre Shepherd’s Bush to turn on the Christmas lights. she performed three songs: WANEGBT, RED and Love Story. one of the best nights of my life. but sadly…i went alone since none of my friends could make it =( my pics are all crappy so i won’t post them.
i really hope that her RED tour comes to the UK in 2013 or 2014 and Ed Sheeran is the opening act (because he is for the North American tour) and then my two friends who also like taylor swift will come with me and it will be AMAZING.
i love the album…yes it’s different to her usual sound but i’m cool with that. i love Stay Stay Stay because that song is about daydreaming about love which is what i always do. i also love the one with ed sheeran Everything Has Changed and 22 is awesome to jam to. so far she’s released videos for WANEGBT, Begin Again and IKYWT. my favourite video so far is Begin Again.
Emblem3 are basically this band that auditioned for the X Factor US and Demi Lovato said they make her SWOOOONNNNN and they really did make me swoon.
from then on…i found all their original music and this is one of my favourite ones True Friends
also they’re really hot and funny and cute and adorable and lovely guys
THEIR SMILES ASDFGHJKL; *SWOON*
okay so it’s been A LOT OF STUFF in this post
more to come: politics, fangirling, best of 2012, team inspire etc etc
thanks for reading my blog
PEACE. LOVE. BOOKS. =D
p.s i’m sorry my layout went a bit weird
