Reviews and stuffs

Greetings ya’ll

howzit going?

i realise i haven’t been blogging for a while…it just takes ages for me to write my thoughts down. i’m too lazy. reblogging gifs on tumblr is easier.

anyhew so this post will consist of reviews.

i recently watched Mirror, Mirror- here’s the trailer

i really enjoyed this movie- i knew it was gonna be funny from the trailer and yes it was. also, Snow White wasn’t annoying because she was so badass. and Lily Collins is BEAUTIFUL. also Armie Hammer as the lovesick Prince Charming was hilarious. Julia Roberts reminded me of Marie Antoinette. the seven dwarfs were AWESOME. also the film ended with an awesome song!!!

oh and i watched The Hunger Games again. =D it was awesome. i did tear up again at the Reaping and when Rue died and i got a shock when the mutts came AGAIN. i love the soundtrack and the score. and i was just sitting in the cinema quoting the movie to myself and i did the salute etc.

sometimes it sucks being a fangirl because no one gets you apart from OTHER fangirls but none of my friends are like that. i mean they love the books and they put up with my obsession but yeah that’s about it. sigh.

but i love THG fandom. they’re so funny.

THAT IS MAHOGANY is like this inside joke. well not really if you’ve seen the movie but it’s funny.

some sad news. Gary Ross will NOT be directing Catching Fire. his reason is that he won’t have enough time to make it as good as he wants it if they have to start filming in summer/autumn and for a release date of 22nd November 2013. as a fan i would gladly wait longer for an AWESOME movie because whoever directs it now might make it in 3D or might cast Alex Pettyfer or Zac Efron as Finnick Odair. plus Gary and the cast had a great relationship and he truly got on well with Suzanne Collins. sigh.

also the media bashed Jennifer Lawrence about her weight. like WHAT? she is perfect. she is absolutely beautiful and is not fat or thin she’s just right and so damn amazing. how can they say that? gross the media are disgusting.

Jennifer Lawrence is absolutely beautiful and my friend coined the term ‘HILARIOUSLY HOT.’ and that she is. =P

oh and Saturday Night Live did a thing on THG. it’s HILARIOUS. Sofia Vergara is amazing.

also here are my picks for who should play Finnick Odair. either them or some unknown actor.

my first choice is Armie Hammer who is 25 and married (i KNOW). he’s been in The Social Network and is Prince Charming in Mirror, Mirror.

that dashing smile and dazzling eyes...i bet he looks good in his underwear too ๐Ÿ˜‰

next is Grant Gustin who you might know plays The Warbler Sebastain in Glee. at first i was skeptical about him as Finnick but then i watched this interview and now i’m like ‘okay i don’t mind’. =P

hello there ๐Ÿ˜‰

finally i know he auditioned for Peeta and he was devastated that he didn’t get it but i think he’d make a good Finnick Odair. Hunter Parrish.

sugarcube anyone?

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES movie has a release date. 23rd August 2013. yes Lily Collins is Clary Fray and Jamie Campbell Bower is Jace Wayland and he is in extensive training. i REALLY REALLY hope they cast Logan Lerman as Simon Lewis.

also The Host release date is 29th March 2013

here is a sneak peek if you haven’t seen it already. i think the casting for Melanie/Wanda is perfect

in case you’re wondering yes The Host is Stephenie Meyer’s adult novel but it is better than Twilight and actually a really good book.

in other news Josh Hutcherson’s new film Detention is out and i cannot wait to see it because hellooo he gets to ride a unicycle and yeah he filmed this like 2 years ago but it looks hilarious!!!

Josh is also starring in Red Dawn with Chris Hemsworth out later this year. and the trailer for 7 Days in Havana has also been released but i don’t know when that will be out. he hits on a transvestite. hahahahahahahhaaha.

okay so before i get onto the book reviews i’ve started watching True Blood and before you gasp in horror it really isn’t that bad. oh yes it is saucy but i forward a lot of it. i mean i can barely watch 15 movies with the amount they show so in True Blood i have to skip a lot but the plot is really good. but i’m warning you most of the time i’m just think WTF.

l love Sookie coz she’s so badass and Hoyt is just adorable. Lafayette is hilariously awesome and Bill and Eric are of course insanely hot sexy bamfs.

so FINALLYย  onto some book reviews

i finally finished The Greatest Love Story of All Time by Lucy Robinson.

oh the cat Duke Ellington is HILARIOUS

i love it when authors write about cats. cats are awesome. or animals in general because they are so funny. so yes i do love the cat Duke Ellington. the character of Fran on the other hand is so unlikable at first i just want to slap her. but as this is my first ‘chick lit/romcom’ novel my mum said that you’ll like them by the end. this book took me ages to read because i dreaded reading it. at first it started of funny and promising but once Fran became heartbroken and obsessed it freaked me out and i was like wtf get a life woman.

of course the title is meant to be a joke. i hope. i think one of the greatest love stories for me is Buttercup and Westley from The Princess Bride.

but the 8 date rule was that Fran had to go on 8 dates via a dating website before she got together with Michael. the dates were disastrous of course but Freddy…i did NOT SEE THAT COMING. i won’t spoil it in case you want to read it. i love Dave. he’s so sweet.

overall i managed to like it a bit by the end- haha if it was a movie it’s be quite funny i suppose but it’s so cringey it’s hard to read.

All in all, although I am a hopeless romantic I did not like Michael at all and I hated the way Fran talked about him because she seemed positively obsessed and insane. Also her heartbreak was ridiculous. Maybe thatโ€™s just me being callous but I doubt it because I would be demanding why someone broke up with me on my birthday and not wallow in my own self-pity and decide life isnโ€™t worth living. You should never live for someone elseโ€ฆyou live because itโ€™s YOUR LIFE and yes youโ€™d like that person to be a part of it but sometimes things arenโ€™t meant to be.

next is Secrets of a Henna Girl by Sufiya Ahmed

pretty cover

so this novel. WOW. i love it. it’s well written and a great story that NEEDED TO BE TOLD. it’s about forced marriages.

a forced marriage is when one or both people do NOT consent into marriage. this tends to be when parents or fathers force daughters to marry some random guy they’ve never met or their cousin.

an arranged marriage is usually when well wishers or parents arrange meetings with aย  potential spouse and if you both end up liking each other then yeah as long as both people CONSENT TO THE MARRIAGE it doesn’t matter how you met.

so i am a Muslim. forced marriages are NOT islamic. it is forbidden and the marriage is devoid if both people have not given consent. therefore having a forced marriage is unislamic but most families don’t care because it’s more about CULTURE.

that’s why this book is so good because it informs people that there’s a FINE LINE BETWEEN CULTURE AND RELIGION for many people.

so it’s about this 16 year old Zeba from Yorkshire in the UK and she goes on holiday to Pakistan unaware her parents have promised that she will marry her 24 year old cousin who is in the army. the whole point of the marriage is so the boy Asif will move to England and be away from danger but his parents don’t realise that he is blinded by patriotism and will never leave his country. while Zeba’s parents seem to care more about honour and family obligations than their one and only daughter’s happiness.

but thank the lord Zeba’s grandma is a wise old woman who is educated and has some power in the village but being a woman her power is limited.

so yeah this book i loved it because not only was it well written but a wonderful story too and people should be aware of such things but also try to UNDERSTAND why people do it. of course i’m not saying it is right. but as a soon to be anthropologist i cannot JUDGE (for the Lord is the best of judges) and i have my own opinions but if you have to try and put in perspective. ignorance breeds hatred and what people don’t know or understand they don’t like.

anyways moving on

Fever by Dee Shulman. now i was really looking forward to this book BUT…

time travelling romance?

i’m a hopeless romantic. but this book. oh i just did not like it at all. firstly, Eva is way too clever to be ‘normal’ and she’s so ‘perfect’ her life doesn’t even SEEM all that bad. yet she still seems so naive.

or maybe that’s just me thinking everyone is naive. i know i am but i READ a lot compared to many others and so i feel this reading has given me some sort of knowledge…but that’s probably just arrogance.

So Eva isn’t all that great of a protagonist. Sethos Leontis (yeah that’s his name) the famous gladiator is so awesome blah blah blah he’s hot and everyone wants him and he’s an amazingly skilled gladiator so frickin perfect. yeah but i liked him i mean his character was better than Eva.

then he falls in love with Livia with her almond eyes and yeah it’s love at first sight but for some reason it pissed me of. it just reminded me too much of Twilight and i hated that. i mean when i was 13 of course i loved Twilight i was sucked in with that ‘forbidden love’ and all of that but now i’m just like…YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HIM WTF if wrong with you?

anyways so i love Doctor Who and historical fiction and romance but this book just didn’t do it for me. maybe you’ll like it. but i sure didn’t.

โ€œWhen you meet someone so different from yourself, in a good way, you don’t even have to kiss to have fireworks go off. It’s like fireworks in your heart all the time.” Lisa Shroeder

i honestly believe in that quote right there no it wasn’t from the book it’s from some other random book. anyways but yes…that quote is certainly true. not that i would know.

so the next book

The One Dollar Horse by Lauren St John

i love horses

so i was in Waterstones looking at the new books and then there it was and i was like OMG LAUREN ST JOHN and i picked it up and read the blurb and yay it was buy one get one half price so my mum got it for me. =D

so this book is evidently about horses. in particular racing or ‘eventing’ as it is called. i don’t know much about horses or racing but this book definitely informed me on the ups and downs and how much effort it is both for the horse and the trainer.

so for any horse or animal lovers this is a book to read because the writing is wonderful and the story is captivating. it’s for older readers as there’s a few issues dealt with. for one, her father was in jail…not for murder or anything but for robbery so yeah.

some things were as predicted but others were a nice surprise. for some odd reason this book had a ‘love at first sight’ moment BUT I FELT HAPPY AND IT MELTED MY HEART whereas for Fever it was just like ‘meh.’ maybe it was the writing then. i hate giving bad reviews because i know how hard it is to write a book but it’s very subjective.

so yeah i loved this story and am looking forward to the sequel which i think is out next year.

yep i’ve been busy reading lots so Fever by Lauren DeStefano

another book called fever but a different kind

so this is the sequel to Wither where the men die at 25 and the women at 23 or something and the abduct girls to get them pregnant etc. the dystopian novel. so SPOILER ALERT: she escapes and they end up trapped somewhere else with some crazy freaky woman called Madame and then VAUGN FRICKIN FINDS HER OMG i was so scared…i hate him. he gives me the creeps. so yeah this book is good. if you liked the first one and you’re curious about the 2nd one then read it. the ending was aย  bit ‘meh’ coz now i have to wait for the next book right.

i’m not good at waiting. but good things come to those who wait. i.e the book. LOL. eventually. i have other things to occupy me in the mean time so yeah.

but this author is amazing. she just wrote this on facebook about writing and any aspiring writers or even just readers should give this a read. truly inspiring

ah next is The Stories of Eva Luna by Isabel Allende

i had a worse cover

so i LOVE Isabel Allende and this is the third book i’ve read of hers.

her writing is truly enchanting and if you haven’t’ had the privilege of being captivated by her storytelling i suggest you try one of her books.

this is a collection of short stories and of course some are disturbing while others are hilarious but Isabel Allende is a master storyteller. she can weave those words and she definitely has a gift. maybe it’s writing in Spanish because the words seem to just flow…but i don’t know. all i know is her books continue to amaze me.

last but certainly not least is The Humming Room by Ellen Potter

i love this cover so much

this story is based on The Secret Garden. i love Ellen Potter’s style of writing and her imagination continues to astound me. her writing is fabulously oozing with wonderful words and her characters are awesome. Roo Fanshaw. what a name. this story is so easy to read and is pure escapism. just curl up and lose yourself to a world full of enigma and discovery.

the characters are wonderful, the book is funny and captivating and a bit creepy at times and the writing is fabulous. as always.

so this has been a really really long post and i’m sorry i really should break it down.

but hope you enjoyed reading it and Happy Reading

go see The Hunger Games if you haven’t!!!

also The Lorax because that is hilarious and Dr Seuss is awesome. it has a good message about conservation and saving the environment. so be sustainable people.

also here is the new song Both of Us by B.O.B ft Taylor Swift

May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favour

i shall leave you with some quotes

โ€œYou should never be surprised when someone treats you with respect, you should expect it.โ€ Sarah Dessen

“We donโ€™t need to have just one favorite. We keep adding favorites. Our favorite book is always the book that speaks most directly to us at a particular stage in our lives. And our lives change. We have other favorites that give us what we most need at that particular time. But we never lose the old favorites. Theyโ€™re always with us. We just sort of accumulate them.” Lloyd Alexander

“I think itโ€™s very healthy to spend time alone. You need to know how to be alone and not be defined by another person.” Oscar Wilde

p.s so more to come: BBC Free Speech (the UK’s prison system, sex education and web surveillance), pre ordered Insurgent (sequel to Divergent) and City of Lost Souls (BOOK 5 in The Mortal Instruments series) and i’m going to watch Midnight in Paris, Iron Man (so i can watch The Avengers) and lots more. updating my blog may be slow because i have tons of revision to do for my june exams so i may post once in may and then at the end of june. check my tumblr for my recent updates but i make take a hiatus for there too as it’s a BIG DISTRACTION. we’ll see. anyhew. remember THAT IS MAHOGANY. Stay Beautiful. =)

  1. Thanks for the information on The One Dollar Horse. I am a horse lover and this sounds like a book I would definitely read. One horse book that I really liked is called The Outside of a Horse by Ginny Rorby. If you want to find more books to read, check out our blog.
